In 2016, as in previous years, the Onassis Foundation has undertaken to sponsor the participation of teams of Greek school pupils in the International and Balkan Science Olympiads. The president of the Onassis Foundation, Anthony Papadimitriou, announced this important initiative during an event attended by the Minister of Education, Research and Religious Affairs, Mr. Nikos Filis, that took place on Tuesday, 22 December 2015 at the Greek Library of the Onassis Foundation.
In his speech Anthony Papadimitriou stressed that, “Supporting these pupils is all about making our mission, which is to release the country’s potential, tangible”, and added that, “We would stress the emphasis we place on supporting the young generation which is trying to spread its wings, especially when it represents us at international level, and is communicating to the world the image of Greece we envision.”
The Minister of Education, Research and Religious Affairs, Nikos Filis, thanked the Onassis Foundation. He said it honours the legacy of its founder through its actions, and pointed out that, “It is the government’s duty to support the public education system and therefore it is open to collaboration with non-profit organisations, which can contribute in some regards, not all, to upgrading and supporting the public education system.”
During the event the Onassis Foundation bestowed honours on the 18 school pupils who won a medal or received citations at the 2015 Science Olympiads, and welcomed and congratulated the parents and accompanying teachers. The ceremony was also attended by Mr. Ioannis Ioannidis, Vice President of the Onassis Foundation, Mrs. Marianna Moschou, Secretary of the Board, Mr. Pavlos Ioannidis, Vice-President Emeritus of the Onassis Foundation, and Mr. Paraskevas Ioannidis, Board member.
It should be noted that with the support of the Onassis Foundation 46 students and 21 accompanying teachers attended the 2015 International and Balkan Science Olympiads, with 18 students managing to either win a Gold, Silver or Bronze medal, or receive a citation.
